The fourth run of the Remaking Our Heartlands programme is bringing rejuvenation to the Bukit Merah estate, after engagement sessions with over 400 residents and community members. Residents can expect to see new pedestrian and cycling paths, accessibility upgrades to Neighbourhood Centres (NCs), thematic playgrounds, and educational boards situated all around the estates of Bukit Merah.

A recurring theme of these conversations was the unique appeal of Bukit Merah, with its distinctive charm and character. (…) In fact, some residents have likened our town to a ‘living museum’ and hope to see more of Bukit Merah’s rich heritage integrated into the town’s landscape.

7 key strategies used to reinvigorate the town

Situated in Bukit Merah Town Centre, ‘The Plaza’ will be a new sheltered space with seating where performances and events can take place. The area will be more conducive to hosting larger community events such as festive bazaars and fitness activities.

Pedestrian malls at the Town Centre will also see more seating and new play areas. This makeover will enhance the area’s attractiveness and improve the shopping experience for residents.

The common areas of six existing neighbourhood centres in Bukit Merah will also be refreshed with more amenities such as outdoor seating, play facilities and spaces for community events. One example is the open space at Alexandra Village neighbourhood centre, which will be given a facelift with new facilities.

New pedestrian and cycling paths, as well as sheltered linkways, will be expanded along Redhill Close to make it safer and more convenient for users to travel between Bukit Merah Town Centre and Redhill MRT Station.

Residents can look forward to more green spaces as a new pocket park will be built to bring greater connectivity from the Town Centre to the Rail Corridor green passage. Pedestrian paths will be enhanced by adding new rest points with landscaped seating areas.

Fitness amenities will also be upgraded at Telok Blangah Hill Park and Mount Faber Park, with enhanced access and better wayfinding to the parks.

As more than one-third of Bukit Merah's residents are aged 60 and above, a key focus of the renewal plans will be to make the neighbourhoods more senior-friendly.

Active ageing amenities such as therapeutic gardens, fitness trails or corners and exercise equipment will be added to the various parks in Bukit Merah to encourage seniors to lead active and healthier lifestyles. Ramps and non-slip flooring are also some of the upgrades to enhance comfort and help seniors navigate their way safely.
